| The discovery of a Bronze Age site on the Island of Umm an Nar and the excavations at other archaeological sites in the eastern region of Abu Dhabi some 45 years ago, led Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan who was Ruler of Abu Dhabi by then, to establish the museum. His Highness Sheikh Zayed who believes that a country without a past has neither present nor a future became a president of the United Arab Emirates after its foundation in 1971. |

| Al Ain is a fertile oasis city located approximately 160 kilometres east of the Abu Dhabi capital. Its name ("the spring" in Arabic) derives from its originally plentiful supply of fresh water, which makes its way underground across most of the plain lying before the Omani mountains. |

| Al Ain boasts of several historical forts and archaeological sites. Some of the facts and insights about the city can be seen in the museums of Al Ain. Al Ain Zoo and Aquarium is spread over 400 hectares of area. Al Ain Zoo and Aquarium is the largest Zoo in the entire Gulf region. The Zoo is the home to a wide variety of species including both common and rare species. The Zoo runs an ongoing breeding program for endangered animals too. |
